HistoPad
The tablet can be set in German, English, French, Dutch, Polish, and Czech. The "HistoPad" allows visitors to digitally transport historical rooms into the past through augmented reality, creating a better understanding of their former use. In addition to animations, further information can be accessed by tapping the screen. By default, this information is displayed as text or images. The tablet can also be set into audio mode under settings. When selected, text is read out loud. For better listening comprehension, you can borrow headphones from the service staff at the ticket counter. They can also assist you in setting up the audio mode. The "HistoPad" also features a wheelchair mode, allowing people with mobility impairments to explore the digital content of the upper floors in a different location. You can select this mode under the wheelchair symbol in the settings. Upon request, the service staff can help you set up the wheelchair mode on your "HistoPad" when issuing the tablet. All visitors receive a brief explanation of how to use the tablet when it is issued at the ticket counter. We recommend the tablet for ages 6 and older, and encourage older visitors to use it as well. The "HistoPad" also includes a small treasure hunt, where eight escape items must be found in the animations, which we can recommend for children and adults alike.
Lockers
There are free lockers in various sizes in the museum shop and entrance area. If you need assistance opening or closing, please contact our service staff.
Orientation
The museum is located in the historic official building. If you walk through the gatehouse from the lower castle courtyard towards the upper castle courtyard, the museum entrance is directly ahead. Information about opening hours and admission prices can be found on the entrance door. Directions to the toilets are available in the museum entrance and outside in the inner courtyard. At the toilets, there is also a sign pointing back to the museum entrance. From there, the exhibition follows a clear color concept for orientation: all content related to the Renaissance and architectural history is marked in red, the stories of the prisoners of the prisoner-of-war camp Oflag IV C are marked in green, and the content related to the asylum and hospital history is marked in blue. The museum exit and the museum shop are marked in yellow. Rooms that are off-limits and emergency exits are clearly signposted. Need assistance? Feel free to contact us by phone at 034381 55530.

- The best exit in Colditz is at the Sportplatz (sports field). From here it is about 10 minutes walk to the castle. To do this, turn into Nicolaistraße from the bus stop Sportplatz at the roundabout. At the end of Nicolaistraße turn left and right again to get to the market. The market is rising. At the upper end of the market, a steep staircase leads to the left of the Sparkasse on the way to the castle. To the right of the Sparkasse, the Kirchberg goes along. This is a slightly less steep alternative to the stairs and offers the possibility of stepless access to the castle. The Kirchberg also ends in front of the castle's first gatehouse. For people with reduced mobility, we recommend turning right into Töpfergasse after the town hall and going up to the castle on the left via Kirchgasse. This is a minimum detour of about 100m, but it is less steep and also stepless.
Here you will find further information on the train connections and bus conncetions.
Seating options
There are benches for resting or picnicking in the castle's courtyard. In the museum you have the opportunity to sit in different rooms. However, we would like to ask you not to consume food and drinks in the museum.
Toilets
The toilets are accessible free of charge during museum opening hours. They are located in the upper courtyard of the castle. The entrance to the toilets rises two steps off the ground. Unfortunately, the castle does not have a disabled toilet or changing facilities. Please note that there are no other toilets within the exhibition.
Wheelchairs and rollators
The castle grounds are paved but uneven. It can be a bit bumpy in some places for people in wheelchairs or with walking aids. We therefore advise guest to take caution. Wheelchairs and walkers can only be used in the ground floor premises, this includes the museum shop, the castle chapel and the exhibition rooms on ground level.
The tablet guide "HistoPad" has a wheelchair mode that allows people with mobility limitations to experience the digital content of the upper floors elsewhere. Upon request, service staff will assist with the tablet issue by adjusting the wheelchair mode on your "HistoPad."
